Overview

Bay FM Foundation and Lenro Stoltz are teaming up to climb the highest freestanding mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro.  This challenge is aimed at raising funds for the Bay FM Foundation to ensure it is enabled to accomplish more life changing experiences in the lives of persons in the Bay FM broadcast area.

ABOUT KILIMANJARO

Kilimanjaro is a giant stratovolcano and one of the largest volcanoes in the world. It is the highest mountain in Africa, rising to 5,895m (19 340 ft) in altitude and covers an area of about 355sqkm. Kilimanjaro is also the highest freestanding mountain in the world. It has three main volcanic peaks: the oldest peak Shira (3,962m - 13 000 ft), Mawenzi (5,149m - 16 896 ft) and Kibo (5,895m - 19 340 ft). The crater of Kibo is 1.3km in diameter with a 350m deep ash pit in the centre.

Since 1912 the mountain has lost 82% of its ice cap and since 1962 - 55% of its remaining glaciers.  Kibo still retains permanent ice, but the mountain is forecast to lose its ice cap. Mawenzi also has patches of semi-permanent ice.  Kilimanjaro is located 3 degrees South of the equator just inside Tanzania’s Northern border.

THE PLAN

Lenro Stoltz will commence their journey to Tanzania on 10 July 2012.  Their official start date to climb Kilimanjaro, using the Machame Route, is scheduled for 13 July 2012.

During the climb, the Bay FM jocks and studio in Nelson Mandela Bay will be in regular contact with them as they take on the mountain and aim to raise funds for the Foundation.

The Machame Route

The Machame Route is also known as the "Whiskey route". It is a wilderness route, which combines spectacular views and scenery and good acclimatisation. With a gradual ascent through the forest you emerge to see wide views of the moorland on Shira plateau, rocky trails and scree with stunning scenery and beautiful ice formations along the way. The different kinds of vegetation found along the route make it the most scenic route. For all this reasons it is perhaps the best of the standard routes on the mountain. Overnights are spent camping in tents.

HOW YOU CAN PARTNER

This initiative has been earmarked specifically as a fundraiser for Bay FM Foundation.

The success of this initiative hinges strongly on the type of sponsors and support secured.  We are calling on business and individuals to consider making a donation in the form of cash.  Each kilometre walked by our climbers is a potential kilometre funded by you to ensure that the Foundation can go the extra mile to accomplish more life challenging initiatives in the Bay FM broadcast area.

This is how it works

The selected route up Kilimanjaro is a total of 62 kilometres.

We need business and individuals to come on board with us to sponsor or part sponsor each kilometre walked at a cost of R1,000.00 per kilometre.

During every day of the walk, Bay FM will provide specific detail of the climbers position, condition and most important, provide the sponsor/s of that particular leg exposure on radio.

Example: Prestige Auto Body Repairers sponsors the distance walked on Day 4, Barranco Camp - 3 kilometres.  The total sponsorship amounts to R3,000.00 On day 4, the Bay FM Drive Show team will provide specific information about the climbers, their challenges, they will post pictures on Facebook and the Bay FM Website and equally important, they will provide airtime to the sponsoring business to tell listeners about a) why they are opting to join forces in this way to fund Bay FM Foundation and b) provide listeners with a detailed overview of their business and its offering.  For Day 4 only, the Bay FM Drive Show will be renamed the “Prestige Auto Body Repairers Drive Show on Bay FM”.

In addition to the exposure detailed above, a representative from Prestige Auto Body Repairers will be invited to sit in on the Drive Show as the Bay FM jocks occasionally facilitate a conversation about the business and the Kilimanjaro climb.

In addition to the exposure provided, Bay FM Foundation will provide Prestige Auto Body Repairers with a tax deductible donation certificate for the total rand value of your donation. Bay FM and the Foundation is a registered Public Benefit Organisation in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act.  It is also BBBEE accredited and can assist your business in this regard with its BEE scorecard.
