General Motors South Africa hands over three Chevrolet Luminas to PE Flying Squad

Three Chevrolet Luminas, valued at over R1,1-million, were handed over to the South African Police Service's (SAPS) Flying Squad in Port Elizabeth today.

These high performance vehicles, which boast powerful V8 engines with an output of 270kw, form part of a General Motors South Africa (GMSA) pilot project that has already seen three 9-3 Aero 2.8 V6 Saab vehicles donated to the SAPS Port Elizabeth Flying Squad two years ago.

SAPS ensured that each Lumina is fully equipped with lights, radio and a tracker tracing system valued at around R36, 000 per vehicle while one of the vehicles is equipped with a state of the art camera system, the Arbitrator 2.0, valued at over R100,000.

President and Managing Director of General Motors South Africa and President of General Motors Sub Saharan Africa, Edgar Lourencon, who drives a Lumina himself, handed over the keys to Major General Johan Kapp from the SAPS at a small ceremony at GMSA's vehicle conversion and distribution centre (VCDC) this morning. "GMSA is committed to making a difference in the community in which we operate and our commitment goes beyond that of assembling and selling motor cars," said Lourencon.

"We believe in embarking on sustainable projects and initiatives that will impact positively on people’s lives, such as this initiative which has and will continue to make Port Elizabeth a safer place for its citizens."

Lourencon said the initial project, providing the Port Elizabeth Flying Squad with the SAABs, had shown just how effective such a partnership could be.

"We saw such positive results and how effectively those vehicles were being used that it was a big motivation for us to continue with the project, which has led to today's handover," he said.

Statistics show that during the period from January to July 2011, the Port Elizabeth Flying Squad attended to 6,307 complaints. Of those, 1,906 were priority one complaints, indicating a crime of a serious nature in progress where high speed vehicles were required. During the same period, the Flying Squad also made 556 arrests and recovered 196 stolen vehicles.

Lourencon commended Kapp and the flying squad members for the work they do.

"These vehicles will aid you in the fight against crime, and from a visible policing perspective, may intimidate and deter criminals from committing crime," he said.

Lourencon also commended the staff at the VCDC for their dedication and commitment in equipping the vehicles and getting them ready for the handover.

"This is not simply about handing over these vehicles, we will also be maintaining them and it is good to know that we have such a competent, passionate team that will be keeping these vehicles in good working order," he said.

Kapp said the new high performance vehicles were a real blessing to the Flying Squad, which responded to priority complaints such as cash in transit heists, armed robberies and hijackings, where quick reaction times were crucial.

"These additional vehicles put us on the same level, if not better, than the larger policing areas in the Western Cape, Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng," said Kapp.

"This will enable the Flying Squad to render a more professional service to the community and increase our reaction times to priority crimes," he said.

Kapp said the hand over came at just the right time, as police started gearing up for the festive season.

Two of the SAABs are still fully operational, having clocked over 272,000km per vehicle, while the third vehicle was written off in an accident during a high speed motor chase.

  • meer as 50 kg weeg;
  • tussen die ouderdom van 16 en 65 is;
  • ʼn veilige seksuele leefstyl lei;
  • goeie gesondheid geniet en
  • onthou om ten minste vier ure voor bloedskenking te eet.

Vir meer inligting kontak SANBD tollvry by 0800 11 90 31 of besoek ons webtuiste by www.sanbs.org.za

Onthou: Jou bloed red lewens.

Cricket star cycles for charity

Chevrolet Warriors and Protea all rounder, Johan Botha, once again takes on the 24 cycling challenge this year to raise funds for charity.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Botha cycles for charity for 24 hours around the circumference of St Georges Park, home of the Axxess DSL cricket ground. Botha recently returned to South Africa after representing the Rajastan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in India and leaves tomorrow (31 May) for England where he will be playing county  cricket.

Despite his busy cricket schedule Botha, who is also a keen cyclist, finds time to cycle in preparation of the 24 hour cycling challenge. Sponsored by Chevrolet and General Motors South Africa (GMSA), Botha started this initiative four years ago to raise funds for people with special needs. Together with a few dedicated cyclists, Botha last year amassed a distance of 574, 5 kilometers, completing 266 laps around St Georges Park in Port Elizabeth which is a distance of 2, 16 kilometres.

Asked how he managed to balance the cycling preparation and playing professional cricket, Botha said that if one is dedicated to the purpose there will be time. “I am grateful to my wife, together with the team from the sponsors of the event, General Motors, who so tirelessly organise the event, all I do is cycle,” said a modest Botha.

Botha aims to raise in excess of R200 000 this year which will be donated to the charities selected this year, Just Inspired, Khanya Youth Development in New Brighton and Masimanye Day Care Centre in Despatch.

Just Inspired is a school campaign which is aimed at doing a mini makeover at 20 local schools in the various townships in the metro.  Work has already been done at a number of the schools inspired by Canadian singer/songwriter Justin Hine's song “Say what you will” which was used to initiate the first school makeover in April 2010

Khanya Youth Development is run by Ms Nokuthula Mtimka and is situated in New Brighton.  There are 120 school-going children who are either aids orphans or neglected by parents.  Nokuthula feeds them on a daily basis and has educators who give extra classes after school.

Masimanye Day Care Centre in Despatch is run by Erica Ntombela.  She takes care and feed 80 school going children and 25 babies.

“I appeal to you for your kind support in order to help me fulfill my mission to assist these charities. Invite your friends and family to come to Axxess DSL St Georges and make a pledge, every little bit helps.  Your support in attending the event or making a financial contribution is greatly appreciated,” said Botha.

Donations can be made into the following bank account:

Bank: ABSA  / Name: Cycle Challenge  / Branch: 511 917 or 632005  / Acc. Number: 9203931968

Kindly fax a proof of payment to Monica on 041 373 6521 or e-mail to mj_botha@telkomsa.net.

GM Dealership reaches out to local community

Kenrich Motors, a General Motors dealership in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, has pledged R10 000 per month towards the Aftercare Enrichment (ACE) programme for vulnerable children in the area.

The ACE project, an initiative run by the Integrated Community Development Project Trust (ICDP), cares for vulnerable children after school by providing a nutritional meal and a structured programme that focuses on literacy, numeracy, life skills, physical activities and musical development at the Lebone Centre.

The involvement of Kenrich Motors is part of the national GM Childlife Foundation (GMCF) project that was established by General Motors South Africa, its dealer network and GMSA Financial Services three years ago to improve the lives of children in poor communities.

According to Dean Kent, dealer owner, about 195 children are involved in the various activities offered by the ICDP Trust. “This intervention has resulted in some of the children dramatically improving their academic performance at school, improved behaviour and better nutrition and health,” said Kent.

However, Kent is taking their community involvement a step further by allowing his staff to be actively involved in these children’s lives at the Centre, during office hours. “We therefore do not regard our involvement as tokenism or financial goodwill, but adding value to the lives of these children as well as to the staff at our dealership,” said Kent.

The staff assist with activities such as reading to the children, playing and coaching sport, art and craft projects, assisting with homework, working with the children in the centre’s garden, taking them out for treats such as walks in the botanical gardens, movies and ice-cream, and transporting them to and from the Kingswood College music school for lessons. Since this involvement, two of the children have been selected to attend the Kingswood Beginner Band camp during the first weekend of the term.

Splash just what the Doctor ordered

Splash just what the Doctor ordered

The 21st annual Nelson Mandela Bay Splash Festival had a rip-roaring send-off on Easter Monday as Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels got the capacity crowd jiving at Hobie Beach in Port Elizabeth.

The concert capped off four days of sunshine in which an estimated 400 000-plus visitors enjoyed jam-packed entertainment and watersports programmes as well as over 200 food and craft stalls.

“The weather played along and we’ve certainly done better than last year,” said festival director Glenn van Eck, noting that there had been a continuous flow of people throughout the weekend.

He said there had possibly not been as many out-of-town visitors due to the fact that the long weekend did not fall during the school holidays this year.

Despite this, stallholders reported better overall trading than in previous years. “Some even ran out of stock due to the demand.”

Van Eck said the biggest attendance day was on Saturday, which included the Bell Buoy Challenge open-water swim in the morning, Canadian singer Justin Hines in the afternoon and the Algoa FM Fireworks and R&B star Loyiso Bala in the evening.

“The Bay FM Search for a DJ was also hugely popular,” said Van Eck. He said the competition, which this year included a boot camp and R100 000 worth of prizes, was designed to put the winner on a sound footing as a professional DJ.

At the Sunday evening final, 21-year-old Shaam Dafunk’s technical ability, mixing skills and stage presence got the audience and judges’ votes ahead of her all-male fellow contestants.

Van Eck said apart from the entertainment programme that also included a Local is Lekker slot and the Comedy Festival, beach-based events like the volleyball and wrestling had been well received.

“The volleyball had the highest number of entries of any tournament on the circuit this year and the wrestling was taped for screening in 25 countries.”

Coordinator Michael Zoetmulder said the watersports programme had been a big success and he was thrilled with the national and international interest.

“(Slovenian swimmer) Rok Kerin told me the festival is on a par with any of the events he participates in around the world – both in terms of atmosphere and organisation.”

Zoetmulder said there had been a good variety of disciplines – including jetskiing, inflatable boat racing, surf skiing, open-water swimming and beach events.

“From our side, we’re looking forward to bringing in more lifesaving events. It suits the King of the Bay elimination format perfectly.”

Van Eck said the festival had been generally crime-free with just three minor incidents of petty theft reported.

“One female swimmer in the Bell Buoy Challenge required medical assistance for fatigue and hypothermia, while another member of the public was treated following an epileptic fit.”

He said no road closures were required and public parking areas at The Boardwalk remained full throughout the weekend.
